Pälsvård

Pälsvård är ett helt kapitel för sig. Det har varit svårt att hitta bra information om hur man skall gå till väga. Vi trodde att det bara var att tvätta katten senast dagen innan, massera in lite balsam och föna så skulle det vara klart........ack vad vi bedrog oss.

Det viktiga är att lära känna sina katters pälsar.
Här är några tips...

• Katten skall badas senast 3 - 4 dagar innan utställning. Detta för att pälsen skall hinna återfetta sig och inte bli flygig.
• Shamponera tre gånger. Jo, du läste rätt, det räcker inte med bara en gång utan tre. En del säger att man skall shamponera sju gånger men det har jag inte provat.
  Vi använder KW´s citron schampoo till våra röda katter. Skölj ordentligt. Det skall "gnissla" om pälsen, precis som det gär när man tvättar sitt eget hår. Då är pälsen ren.
• Använd ett bra balsam till pälsen. Under föningen, om det nu går att föna katten, måste man kamma pälsen för att den skall bli slät. Speciellt under magen. Använd en stålkam som inte gör pälsen elektrisk. En stålborste gör oftast mer skada än nytta på pälsen. Går det inte att använda fönen får man kamma medans pälsen lufttorkar.
• Dagen innan utställning kan man pudra pälsen. Pudret hjälper till att dela på hårstråna så att de inte klumpar ihop sig. Det här gör att pälsen blir fluffig och luftig. Jätteviktigt att man borstar ut allt puder innan utställningen.
• Som sista finnish innan utställningen lägger man på något som kallas Coatgloss - pälsglans. Nu är det dags att ta fram borsten med naturborst. En fördel är om den är lite mindre och rak så man kommer åt överallt. Coatgloss gör att pälsen lägger sig tillrätta och tar bort den statiska elektrisiteten.
• Det sista man gör är att hälla lite puder i borsten och sedan fluffa upp kragen.
• Var försiktig med att ta i katten om du är mycket varm om händerna, te.x lite svetting. Då faller hela "frisyren".
• Sist men inte minst - tänkt på den statiska elektrisiteten. Det är aldrig kul för katten att få stötar när man hanskas med den.

Grooming

Coat grooming is a different story altogether. It has been very hard to find adequate information. We thought that all one needed to do was to bathe the cat, condition the fur, blow dry and that should be it....boy was we wrong ;-))

At the latest exhibition Zeeke was NOM for the panel on one condition, if we could find someone to help us prepare his coat. To our luck Martina, who owns the S*Svartträskets cattery helped us out and gave us some very useful tips and hints. The most important is to know your cats fur quality. That way it is a lot easier to prepare them in the right way. Thank you Martina.

Here are the tips we received...

• Bathe the cat at least 3-4 days prior to exhebition. This is to let the fur regain it´s natural oil and not become static.
• Use a good quality shampoo and shampoo three times. Yes, you read it right, once is not enough. Some say up to seven times but I found that three is more than enought on my cats. We use KW´s citrus shampoo to our red cats. Rinse thouroughly. The fur shall have a squeeky feel or sound to it, then it´s clean.
• Use a good conditioner for the fur. During blowdrying, provided the cat accepts it, the fur must be combed for it to become straight, especially on the belly. If blow-drying is not an option you have to combe the hair while it air dries. A steelcombe that does not electryfie the fur is ideal for this purpous. A steelbrush often damage the fur.
• Dagen innan utställning kan man pudra pälsen. Pudret hjälper till att dela på hårstråna så att de inte klumpar ihop sig. Det här gör att pälsen blir fluffig och luftig. Jätteviktigt att man borstar ut allt puder innan utställningen.
• The day before the exhebition you might need to powder the fur. The powder helps to separate the hairs so they do not stick together. This makes the coat very airy and fluffy.
• As the last finnish before the exhebition use coatgloss. Now it is time for the all natural hairbrush. It is very convinient if the brush is straight and a smaller size so you can get into all the narrow places. The coatgloss makes the coat stay in place and reduces the static electricity.
• The absolute last thing to do is to put a small amount of powder and go over the collar and tail to make it airy and flyffy.
• Be careful not to touch the cat if you have very varm hands i.e. a little bit sweaty. This makes the whole coat styling to disapear.
• Last but not least - be aware of the static electricity. It is never comfertable for the cat to get chocks when handeled.
